When a team goes under, as the Sydney Kings and Brisbane Bullets did this past offseason, the immediate anguish of fans runs in stages. Initially they realise that they will no longer have a team to support and games to watch. The next step normally involves wondering where their favourite players and the coaching staff will go. Rarely however, do people worry for the plight of our much-loved mascots of the game.

Well, someone does care. Nicole takes a particular interest in mascots and in her left of middle sport blog she asks the question that many have avoided. What has happened to the Lion and the Bullet? Perhaps Dodge Taylor can help us out with some information on that last one…

It appears that Nicole is not the only one that has former mascots on the mind, as this comic from the Garbage Time All-Stars shows.

Meanwhile there is plenty of debate in NBL circles at the moment as to which teams will form part of the “New NBL” (which is yet to be named). There is much talk of amalgamation of teams and every theory under the sun has been thrown up as to reasoning for teams being excluded or included. Ultimately the powers that be say that any team that can put together a bid which fits the yet to be determined criteria will have the right to gain a licence. I have a feeling that there will be some sore and sorry fans no matter which way things go.

Today’s Warnings from the land of the NBL:

  • Glockers has his NBL team of the week.
  • Aaron Bruce and John Rillie have got a game of H-O-R-S-E going via youtube. This could be interesting… I really think Steve Nash needs to get involved in this, if he’s not selling vitamin water.
  • Whilst on the topic of Bruce, do you believe he is the real deal?
  • The Age seems to think that both the Tigers and the Dragons are safe under the new structure. Time will tell, though it would be surprising if they were not there.
  • The Australian also seems certain that the Brisbane Bullets will be back next season, but isn’t so sure about the Sydney Kings, with reportedly noone coming forward with the cash.
  • The Blaze say they’re not going anywhere.
  • Meanwhile the Tasmanians are looking at this as an opportunity to break back into the National league. I wonder what the people of Darwin are scheming?
