It is indeed the time of madness, March Madness to be precise. And so, we’re celebrating by pulling out the vintage footage from NCAA tournaments of years gone by. The 1940 NCAA Final contested by Indiana and Kansas has been well received and today we have two more clips to share.
Firstly, here is a 1942 game between Minnesota at Illinois. The actual eight-team NCAA tournament did not feature Minnesota, so this must have been a non-tourney game. Check out those three-man weaves!
Secondly we have another game between the same two schools, held in 1949. The standard and style of the game is vastly different to that of today — not to mention the rule variations. Interestingly, that year the Most Outstanding Player in the NCAA Final was the late great Alex Groza, of Kentucky (as he also was the previous year). At 6’7″ he was the captain and centre for the 1948 and 1949 NCAA champions, as well as a 1948 gold medal Olympian for USA. In 1951 he was banned for life from the NBA for point-shaving that allegedly occurred at Kentucky.
