Butch Carter, who was then coach of the Toronto Raptors, once lost $5000 cash in a San Antonio hotel room. A housekeeper at the hotel returned the money. Butch rewarded her with $1000 for her kindness. Yes, I told you it was weird.
The story took place in February 2000 after Carter’s craptastic Raptors lost 112-95 to the Spurs. For some odd reason, Carter was carrying copious amounts of cash around in his pocket… and sleeping on it in his pillow case it seems. I don’t know about you, but I always find it a bit unusual when people carry around quantities of cash of that magnitude. Perhaps that was the Raptors players’ per diem money which he was supposed to distribute?
The wonder that is google news’ newspapers archive has the story at the time.
How did Carter’s Raptors do that season? Well they did win 45 games on their way to a first round 0-3 playoff exit. However I hope that Carter saved the remainder of that money, as he lost the Raptors gig afterwards and hasn’t been seen in an NBA head coaching role since.
